With the FEMA on-board starting system a dream of many innovative model makers has come true.
Functional description:
With the FEMA on-board starting systems all common internal combustion engines can be started by radio control on ground as well as in the air. The starter engine is designed so powerfully that every internal combustion engine is started safely. Even large engines like the Titan ZG-62 and the OS-Max FT-300 can be started about 20 times with one accumulator charge. FEMA electronic on-board starters are built extremely solid and have demonstrated their ability in more than 15 years of flight practice. For the universal use there are two different variations of on-board starting systems.
>Universal on-board starting system
> Compact on-board starting system
Universal on-board starting system
At this variation only the starting device is attached directly to the internal combustion engine. The starter engine is placed separately from the internal combustion engine inside the fuselage. The power from the starter engine to the crank shaft of the internal combustion engine is transmitted via the cardan shaft over a gearwheel reduction and a high-accuracy freewheel which is fixed onto the crank shaft of the internal combustion engine.
|
If the internal combustion engine is running, the freewheel separates the engine from the gearbox. A high-performance electric motor with a gearbox is used as starter engine. The cardan shaft can be shortened if required which makes it possible to put the starter engine inside the model without alignment.
Advantages of the universal on-board starting system: :
>It can be used universally even if space is limited.
>The cardan shaft which is variable in length with open cardan joints makes a space-saving mounting of the starter engine inside the fuselage possible.
>A back-kick damper can be attached onto the cardan shaft.
>The internal combustion engine can easily be assembled and dismantled because the cardan shaft is coupled with extendible cardan joints.
>The internal combustion engine can also be fixed dynamically damped as the open cardan joints have a length compensation of a maximum of 3 mm.
Compact on-board starting system .
Different to the universal on-board starting system, the internal combustion engine and the on-board starter form a compact unit.

Advantages of the compact on-board starting system :
> The internal combustion engine can easily be assembled and dismantled, together with the complete on-board starter - on the model as well as on the test-bench.
> Internal combustion engine or on-board starter can easily be reached when being serviced.
> The complete driving unit can easily be hung up on the dynamically damped elements.
Control of electronic on-board starting systems: The electronic on-board starter is controlled via micro switches operated from an IC-servo. This has, in comparison to an electronic unit, a higher operational safety. The operation of petrol engines with built-in magneto ignition requires for the control of the electronic on-board starter only a micro switch which can be operated directly from an IC-servo. The heater plug of a heater plug engine can, in conjunction with a switch combination, be switched independently from the starter engine via a channel of the tele control. |
